A Cornerstone of Your Pet’s Health

Dental care is essential for the overall well-being of your dog or cat, though it’s often underestimated. At Gateway Animal Hospital, we’re committed to providing comprehensive dental services at both our Saint Albans and Charleston locations.

Our offerings include professional cleanings, fluoride treatments, extractions if necessary, as well as Prophy and Polishing to keep your pet’s teeth in top condition.

Know The Signs

Dental (or periodontal) disease is the most commonly diagnosed health issue in pets. Signs that your pet might have dental disease include:

  • Yellow or brown tartar buildup on the teeth
  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Excessive drooling
  • Changes in eating or chewing habits
  • Pawing at the face
  • Loose teeth
  • Lethargy

Even if your pet isn’t showing these symptoms, we advise having a veterinarian assess their dental health at least once a year. Without regular check-ups, bacteria and food debris can lead to the breakdown of soft tissue and bone around the teeth, potentially causing severe periodontal disease, tooth loss, and costly oral surgery.

When It’s More Than Just Tarter

Dental issues can also impact other organs: bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream, leading to serious infections in the kidneys, liver, lungs, and heart. If not addressed promptly, these infections can be life-threatening.

Through physical exams and lab work, along with Dental Radiographs, we can diagnose and treat periodontal disease and detect any other health problems.

Schedule your pet’s dental exam today! We can also guide you on brushing your pet’s teeth and recommend foods and treats to help prevent plaque and tartar buildup.
